Most people think they know Alaska.
They don’t know this Alaska.
For a few explosive weeks each March and April, Sitka Sound becomes the most electrifying place in the North Pacific — a natural event so intense, so alive, it feels unreal. This is the Pacific herring spawn: millions of herring surging into the Sound, turning the ocean a surreal tropical turquoise and setting off one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth.
A Feeding Frenzy You Have to Experience to Understand
The moment the herring arrive, everything else does too.
Humpback whales — dozens of them — return from Hawaii starving and ready to feast. They work together in synchronized bubble-net feeding, erupting through the surface in explosions of spray and sound. On an active day?
You might see it 30, 50, even 70 times.
Gray whales vacuum eggs from the shallows.
Bald eagles gather by the hundreds.
Sea lions, seals, and the occasional orca join the chaos.
It’s raw, wild, thundering nature — happening all around you.
Why Experience It Aboard Dauntless
Jim has spent over 40 years commercial fishing throughout Southeast Alaska — the tides, channels, and rhythms of this region are his native language. He has worked in and around Sitka many times over the decades, giving him a strong familiarity with the area without overstating it. In spring, that regional experience matters.
My own background with Alaska Department of Fish & Game adds another layer of insight during a season defined by biology, culture, and community.
These connections often create rare, authentic moments. On past spring trips, local harvesters have gifted us herring eggs on hemlock branches — a Tlingit tradition over 11,000 years old. We’ve been invited close enough to witness the intensity of the commercial fishery as herring are brought aboard and transferred to tenders.
We never stage or promise these moments — they happen organically because this is our home region.
Life on the Water in Spring
Spring weather in Sitka is dramatic — sunshine, snow flurries, sideways rain, and sudden blue skies. Dauntless keeps guests warm and comfortable with a heated cabin, stable viewing decks, flybridge hot tub, fire pit table, and meals designed for long days on the water.
Morning whale calls through the hydrophone.
Afternoon seas erupting with cooperative feeding.
Evenings spent with appetizers and soft spring light.
It’s immersive, intimate, and wildly alive.
Flexible 5–10 Day Spring Charters
We offer customizable 5–10 day M/Y Dauntless charters so guests can choose the perfect balance of time, budget, and immersion.
The herring dictate the action — and we follow them.
Shorter trips dive straight into the heart of the spectacle.
Longer trips allow for deeper exploration of Sitka’s islands, shorelines, wildlife, and cultural moments as the season unfolds.
This Is the Alaska Most People Never See
They come in summer and get beauty.
You come in spring and get magic.
The turquoise water.
The thunder of whales feeding.
The eagles filling the treetops.
An 11,000-year-old cultural tradition unfolding in real time.
Everything — whales, eagles, seals, sea lions, people — converges for one reason: the herring.
This is Alaska at full volume.
